RAVA UPMA or SUJI KA UPMA

Rava upma,suji ka upma is a famous south Indian breakfast recipe.This is very healthy and yummy recipe.Lots of small flavorful ingredients are used to enhance the taste of this recipe.This recipe is called by many names as Rava khichdi,uppittu,uppindi,uppeet,Godhuma Rava upma and suji ka upma.Actually being a breakfast recipe It is so yummy that It can be taken at any time.This is very famous breakfast recipe of south India and it is served in many parties and wedding with chutney. 

In this recipe rave(semolina)is roasted for few minutes and it is added with tempering made using lots of small flavorful Indian spices and ingredients like udad dal,chana dal,few curry leaves,mustard seeds,dry red chilly and water.In this recipe you may add one cup of coconut milk to make it more tasty.

Ingredients for making Rava Upma


  • Suji,Rava(Semolina)1cup
  • Water 3cups
  • Dry red chillies 2
  • Green chillies 2
  • Peanut roasted 1/2cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon 1
  • Mustard seeds  1/2tsp or 1tsp
  • Urad dal 1tsp
  • Chana dal 1tsp
  • Onion chopped 2-3
  • Ginger,garlic paste 1tsp
  • Cumin seeds(optional) 1/2tsp
  • Few curry leaves
  • Oil 1tbsp
  • Fresh coconut grated 2tsp for garnishing
  • Butter or pure ghee 1tbsp+1tsp for garnishing
  • Fresh corriander leaves for garnishing


Method

Step1
Take a pan or wok,add 1 cup of suji.Dry roast for few minutes.Do not over roast and try to change its colour.After dry roasting keep it aside.While roasting the rava, keep the flame low to medium.
Step2
Same wok or pan add,oil and butter or ghee.Allow the butter or ghee to melt.Add urad dal,chana dal,mustard seeds,curry leaves,cumin seeds,dry red chillies.At this time you may add 1 pinch of asafoetida(hing).Saute all the ingredients for few minutes.
Step3
After stir frying these ingredients,it is time to add chopped onion.Saute it for 3-4 minutes,add ginger garlic paste.Stir fry to avoid raw smell of ginger and garlic.You may skip ginger and garlic,if you do not like the taste of these ingredients.Add chopped green chillies and saute for 1 minute.
Step4
Now add 3 cups of water for 1 cup of semolina.Bring the water to boil.Then add roasted suji or rava,add salt.Quickly stir and avoid lumps.It will take few minutes.
Step5
Garnish the yummy breakfast recipe with fresh corriander leaves and one lemon juice.At last add roasted peanuts to take the crunchy taste of upma.You may replace peanut with cashew nuts.I have added peanuts as mostly south Indian people add peanut not cashew nuts.
